Transcend Storejet Not Showing Updates

This problem has been reported on various websites but I've yet to see a clear solution..
Please help!
The external HDD is a StoreJet Transcend 1TB model no: TS1TSJ25M3.
The drive is not recognised on 'Computer' but does come up on 'Devices and Printers' and the dialog suggests it is working properly.
I promise I have tried all the obvious stuff, and stuff recommended by many posters, including:
Checking for power supply
Checking with different USB cables
Checking on different computers
Checking with different OS
Uninstalling/re-installing
Re-installing drivers
Checking and re-installing latest firmware.
A similar Seagate external HDD works perfectly and is recognised normally.
The closest I have got to the problem is confirming, after useful advice, that the drive is not being allocated a letter. This shows up using the Disk Management software provided with Windows. The recommended solution was to right click on the (unlabelled) drive and use 'Change Drive Letter and Paths..'. This seemed very sensible, but the command was not available, and appeared only in faded type. The only options were 'Delete' and 'Help'.
Does anyone have any suggestions I haven't tried yet? My best guess at present is that the fault is with the drive, and it will just have to go back..It's less than 3 months old, was a gift to my son, and has never worked, so has no data on it.
Many thanks, and a very happy Christmas to you all, and all the best for 2018
